Emerald acquires Archnet-IJAR: International Journal of Architectural Research

Archnet-IJAR helps to bridge the gap between theory and practice in the fields of architectural and design research, urban planning and built environment studies

Bingley, United Kingdom, 18 September 2018 – Emerald has acquired Archnet-IJAR: International Journal of Architectural Research, a journal which includes empirical research papers, analytical case studies, and high-quality position papers that contribute to the advancement of knowledge in architecture and urbanism.

The new acquisition complements Emerald’s existing portfolio of journals in Property Management and Built Environment, introduces new areas in architectural and design research, while also expanding coverage in areas such as urban design, urban planning, and cities and sustainable urbanism.

Professor Ashraf M. Salama, Head of Department of Architecture at the University of Strathclyde and Chief Editor of Archnet-IJAR, has been leading the journal since its debut in 2007 and said: “The journal was inaugurated under the sponsorship of Archnet and the Aga Documentation Centre at MIT: Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, USA.  It was the first of its kind; an open access interdisciplinary scholarly, peer reviewed journal of architecture, planning, and built environment studies, aimed at strengthening ties between scholars from the global north and the global south with contributors and readers reaching across the boundaries of cultures and geographies.

“As an architect, academic and scholar, I cultivated Archnet-IJAR, working closely with authors to disseminate their research, and with a distinguished review board whose knowledge and expertise continue to ensure high quality scholarly papers, allowing for a comprehensive academic review of contributions that span a wide spectrum of issues, methods, theoretical approaches and architectural and development practices.  Such effort resulted in a distinguished, highly acclaimed status in the field.  I firmly believe that Emerald Publishing’s reputation and international network will foster the exposure and international appeal of Archnet-IJAR, while enhancing its global presence.”

Archnet-IJAR, which will be free access throughout 2019, adds significant value to Emerald’s existing journal collection, particularly to Emerald’s offering in the European and Middle Eastern market.

The journal has close associations with scholars working with several societies that include Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA), International Association for People-Environment Studies (IAPS), Architecture and Urbanism in the Mediterranean and the Middle East (AUMME), International Association for the Study of Traditional Environments (IASTE), to name a few.  Emerald is keen to deepen and broaden these existing relationships to ensure that Archnet-IJAR remains a key channel for those memberships.

As one of the largest publishers in Property Management and Built Environment journals, this acquisition will enrich the quality and breadth of research published, particularly in areas of Architecture, Urban Design and Planning, and Sustainable Urbanism.
